Whey protein vs. meat protein

I have a question that I would like some help on. I recently tore my ACL so I can't do too much cardio until after my surgery in May. Unfortunately, I would like to lose some body fat before the summer. I am around 9 or 10% right now and would like to get down to 6% or so.

I know I will need to lower my calories, and I was wondering if instead of 6 or 7 meals a day would 4 protein shakes and only 2 meals be fine?

My shakes would be 42g protein and only 230 calories, so those 4 meals would only be about 1000 calories.

Is there anything wrong with the majority of your nutrition coming from whey protein?

Nothing wrong with majority of protein coming from whey but it would be better if it came from food sources. Timing is much more crucial when taking whey because of its quick digestion.

My concern would be the amount of lean body mass you are going to lose while dieting. I assume since you cannot do cardio, you are also not going to be lifting. Which means since you aren't using the muscle and since your body is designed to store fat you are going to be eating up an incredible amount of muscle tissue. Also, if I am reading this correctly it looks like total caloric intake in going to be hovering right around 2000 calories/day. Not sure what you current weight is but that is a very low amount of food to be taking in.

My advice would be to maintain until you recover from surgery, after rehab worry about dropping that little bit of fat.

Resistance excercise is imperitive while dieting. So you maintain as much muscle as possible. Because if you don't eat enough carbs and protein you will lose muscle at a faster rate than fat. 60%-40%. Whey protein is great while dieting BUT you have to remember that you do need adequate nutrition as well. I would recommend more than 2 meals at least 4 small meals with variety of fruit and veg, and a multivitamin supp. For dieting purposes make sure at a minimum you get in 1g of protein per pound of body weight, pref. MORE>.
