What happens when you publicly announce your Illegal use of Steroids?
For example; in the 'Bigger Stronger Faster' Doccumentary, the Bell brothers clearly voice their use and opinions about steroids.

What about after release? Did they become 'Reformed former users'
Or did they continue? . . With the cops on their back. .

It is interesting how people who have publicly admitted using anabolic steroids don't often seem to be prosecuted but the government spends hundreds of millions of dollars pursuing celebrity athletes who have never publicly admitted steroid use e.g. Barry Bonds, Lance Armstrong, Roger Clemens. Even pro athletes who have admitted rarely seem to be bothered e.g Jose Canseco, Floyd Landis. Certainly, there are legal issues involved e.g. public statement doesn't have same legal significance as statement under oath, possession, conspiracy, distribution, etc. in legal system. Steroid use itself is not necessarily illegal - it's the acquisition, possession, etc.

Realistically, you have to pretend you're a prosecutor. This job isn't just about getting the "bad guys," but getting the most bang for the people's buck. He has limited resources, exactly as if he were an investor in stock on the exchange in New York. Your value is dependent upon a handful of factors, but these are the most important ....

1) Are you a real threat to society? Do you belong to a street gang?

2) What is your deterrent potential - are you high profile or wealthy enough to make headlines, furthering his career, should you get caught? Some high profile athletes walk, because their prosecution would have the opposite effect on deterrence. If every kid wants to be that person, the stigma of steroids is nothing compared to the star power they possess. A prosecution advertises steroids.

3) Do you lead to much bigger fish? A bird in the hand, isn't worth a diamond in the bush.

You should never be arrogant about doing anything illegal, but you can be aware of the factors taken into account by one of the most important pillars of a free society.

Finally ....

4) Are you stupid? Do you talk too much?

There's a line which many defense attorney's repeat over and over throughout their careers, often after the fact. He who doesn't talk .... walks.

for the most part, if the people who you have annoyed are part of the government, their actions you will be motivated less by beleifs or philosiphies which run counter to your own, than by the simple desire to remind you that that have far more power than you do, and that, even if you dont fear that power, you should at least have a healthy respect for it. - alexander shulgin
