Using pre-sterilzed vials

I tried to search for this answer but didn't find anything directly answering it, so pardon me as I'm sure it's been answered many times.

When I brew some oil and inject it into a pre sterilized vial, considering that I will have broke the seal, how long is that oil good for? Is the use of pre-sterilzed vials mainly for avoiding some sterilization steps or is it done with the intent to start injecting the oil right away?

A quality pre-sterilized vial like Ultra Spec will be better than what can be accomplished at home with unsterilized vials and stoppers. While sterilizing vials can be done with basic equipment, you can't really get them free of endotoxin or ensure they're free of particulates like Ultra Spec.

Someone once posted sterile stickers to seal the punctured stopper which seems like a good solution to ensuring there's no potential contamination entering the vial over the long term.

Unfortunately I've never been able to find it again, so maybe someone knows what they are.

The other thing of course is to sterilize the stopper top with an alcohol wipe that you allow to dry before injecting into it.

I currently have the ultra spec vials so that is good.

I'm just trying to gauge if I wait until I know I'm going to use the oils or if I make them in advance and plan to use them within a year.

@Ghoul I see these

Perfect, thanks for finding those.

I think you're all set.

In my mind, the issue isn't puncturing the stopper one time when filling that compromises sterility. After all, properly made gear is bacteriostatic, preventing bacteria from reproducing. I think a lot of homebrew has some bacteria present.

The problem is the puncture hole never truly reseals, It will close, but as temps change, pressure in the vial changes, and when cooling it can potentially suck air in through that puncture, and expel air when it warms up. It may only be a small amount, but over a long period of time this "breathing" could contaminate the contents.

So the seal prevents that from happening making the vial suitable for long term storage.

When I let the stoppers dry, I gotta wait like 10 minutes. So I’ve not been letting it dry.

I’ve been under the impression that the alcohol in the wipes evaporates, leaving behind only the water.

Now I’m thinking I’m retarded, and that while surface alcohol may evaporate fast, alcohol within the water isn’t exposed to air, and therefore won’t evaporate. I’m also thinking that adding water to my oils isn’t a good idea.

Do you fellas seriously wait the 10 minutes it takes for the stoppers to fully dry?

No

I fart on my vials before usage, so @Ghoul gets a stroke or a hardon, or both.

OP, sterile vials is NOT a way to avoid proper sterilization through filtration of the brew, something that Elite Retard missed completely when answering. You fill the pre-sterilized vial with filtered brew.

I just wiped a vial top and it took a little over 90 seconds to completely dry.

FWIW I use these. $2 a box at Amazon with free delivery. They're very thick and leave absolutely no fibers behind. More like a very thin sponge than the usual alcohol soaked paper. Highly recommended.

So after I add the oil into a pre-sterilized vial with a filter how long would you suggest I let it sit in the vial before I need to use it? That's really my main question.

Ive used mine within the hour. As long as it’s filtered, I’d personally be fine using it instantly. I’m not sure what letting it sit would accomplish

i just searched Amazon and couldn't find those for $2

Looks like they're out of stock at the moment, but here's the link, they restock very quickly. I just received an order, $2.72/box, most places are $5+. A lot of cheap sterilizing wipes dry out after a while of sitting around, but the thick foil packs these come in keep them good for 5 years, so don't hesitate to grab a bunch when they're available. You'll never switch after trying these.

What Amazon are you on? Cheapest I see them is $4, still a steal.

I picked these up in store with my hsa card and am never going back to off brand. They are so much better than any swab I’ve used.
