The best MR O ever on stage?

Who do you guys think was the best MR O ever to be on stage? Now im not talking about your favorite bodybuilder but more like on that particular night who was the best compared to all his predessors. My favorite would have to be Ronnie Coleman.I was never such a big fan of his physique but the alien that walked on stage in 2003 was simply unreal.287Lbs and drier than hell.Honestly i would have expected cutler to win from what i had read in the magazines but everyone out there was saying Ronnie is finished and his career is over.Jay and Gunter were all the hype.I guess that kind of motivation can be pretty dangerous. He was 247 in 2002.287 in 2003.40 lbs in one yr??? Hmmm.Who else do you guys think pushed the sport to a whole new level on a particular Mr O contest?

Come on guys. There must have been a time when u looked into a mag or somwhere else at pics and went like holy shit.Thats impossible.

Desi, as far as Ronnie goes, you are right.

But there was one more moment!

Mike Mentzer received the ONLY perfect score given to a Mr. America. Mentzer then faced an over-the-hill Arnold. The only reason Mentzer lost against Arnold was because his principles went against EVERYTHING Arnold and Weider had claimed was the proper way to train.

Mentzer was robbed of the title due to politics. Another sad moment in IFBB history...

True but at the same time dont you think what mentzer was recommending close to the time of his death was a lil weird.I mean working out once a week for 30 minutes? I did somewhat understand the one set to training priniple but that was just outright weird. He was however one of the most respected bodybuilders who never became Mr O but still made a tremendous mark in the world of bodybuilding. He was also a rather intelligent man compared to most other bodybuilders.

Well, Mentzer principles are being used today. Mentzer was saying that no more than 15-30 min PER EXCERCISE! That means to 3-4 hard triceps exercises per day, then go home and rest! It worked wonders for Yates and still affects routines today. I personally think Mentzer was 10 years ahead of his time.

i totally agree about mentzer vs arnold. imho desi, cutler wasn't really hype, he had coleman beat 2001 ... and as musch as i like gunther as a person, he is mostly hype. as far as my answer to your post ... i think lee haney was unbelievable every time he stepped on the olympia stage.

lee in his time was awesome....

Menzters training ideas were quite radical and not something I would ever follow. I might have paid more attention to what he actually wrote in his articles if he didnt always go off on some bullsh*t Ayn Rand diatribe.

LOL. I totally agree about his diatribes. For some reason he thought that putting philosophy in his articles would make them seem more linear. He was wrong.

I still think you are under-estimating his impact on BBing. Remember, before Menzter (and Arthur Jones), doing 10 sets of 15 reps was considered "optimal."

I think both camps are wrong, for the most part. There is Arnold on one end of the spectrum with super-high volume and Menzter on the other with super-low volume and low frequency. Those two groups pretty much sum up the ends of the spectrum. Id rather stick to somewhere in the middle.

Well in the words of my gym owner - Mike Mentzer and HIT have done more to injure BBs that anything ever. He is 60, carries sub 6% BF year round, his legs have veins like cables, and has owned the gym 30 years. Over that time he has seen many many men disabled in the BB sense or in fact the everyday fitness sense from years of HIT.

Let's face it pro's like that didnt know WTF they were talking about, and Mike Mentzer, I'm sorry but he was just fucking insane with his philosphy crap.

I would love Mike Mentzer to have tried to train athletes vs. John Smith, or indeed a Mens Health editor.

Rant over, I guess Arnold would be the best physique.

I say I guess because lets face it he looked shit in clothes. Pros since they are jaw dropping freaks but aspirations, no way.

Personally the negro sprinters have physiques far superior to any BB, they look great vs shit in clothes, and are superior fitness/speed wise to the top 10 or so in the world. Linford Christie springs to mind.

And before I get slated for being a pussy for saying that, I DARE any guy on here to post a picture that compares to Linford Christie. Sure you are 250-80 lbs, but no offense most of those look like fatty shit, or are just plain big boned, far far from Greek sculptures.

As far as the best physiques for given sports, the top two, IMO, are gymnasts and sprinters.

IN fact I respect John Smith, Freddy, Hogg stratospherically more than any pro BB, as they know a huge amount about training. In fact I rspect Freddy most of all, as he is natural, because AAS cover up a 101 training mistakes. In fact I'd prefer it if Freddy stayed natural and learnt a life's worth of training knowledge to rival John Smith's.

Dorian Yates etc, they were either lying, which = bad for misleading many and injuring many for money, or were either drug freaks, who responded amazingly to steroids, had very tough livers etc.

I mean look at Dorian when he first started out, he looks like nothing, compared to black guys who have never worked out he was zero, so he was either a drug freak or a training genius, either way = no respect.

I remember 7 years ago when Dorian Yates video blood and guts came out, and the store manager of a weider store put it on for me, I expected to see great training secrets, instead we have Dorian training low volume to failure or a couple of forced reps, maybe a drop set, and being screamed at by a homosexually laughable west midlands drill instructor "Come on Yates, BIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGG MAN TIME, on the UPPPPP" LMAO. I was embarassed, it is a gay wank flick for men who worship muscle maries

Mike Mentzer

I don't usaally reply to post concerning training, But I have to put in my 2 cents. I agree that HIT is not for everyone, But I can tell you from personal experiance that it works for me. I have the worst genes when it comes to building muscle, and even after years of training and with a doctors help with AAS and HGH, I didn't start making impressive gains until I met Mike Mentzer. I had the privilege of spending two weeks with Mike 12 years ago in Cali, and those 2 weeks have changed my body, and my life for the best. At age 43, I look 33, feel 23, and have the presence of mind to not over train and I not have to be a lab rat for AAS. I can do the low doses of AAS that BB'r used 20 years ago and make the kind of gains most only dream of. I guess if you don't like Mike's rants about critical thinking, then that's up to you, and if you don't think that HIT works or is to hard for you, don't use it, but don't take away from the fact that Mike scored the only 300 score ever, A perfect score, the only perfect score!!!!!!!!! Rest in peace my friend, you are sorely missed!!!!!!!

What kind of a training program do you follow? If you dont mind can you the current routine you are using? Have you had any injuries from training that way? Ripped muscles, etc?

I tore up my shoulder in 94, but that was do to a bad spotter, and had a partial discectomy in the L5 S1 lumber in 96, again due to a bad spot. but I guess I shouldn't let the numbers on those plates get into my head. I have never torn a muscle but I rest 7 days in between doing a body part again. My routine hasn't changed since 92 it goes like this: Monday: Chest and Back. Thrusday: Legs. Saturday: Shoulders, Bi's and Tri's. I do everything to positve failure and 2 twice a year I do two complete cycles of complete failure, ( negative and Postive ) thats when I need a good spotter!

yates? he was a super freak, but realistically that torn bicep looked like sh*t and that alone should have kept him from winning the O.

So now in 2022 are still sticking to 2003 Ronnie Coleman the best man ever onstage? I love guys like Nick Walker but even at their best who realistically today can compete with the 2003 Ronnie at the Mr O? Didn’t realize he was so ahead of his time. Wish he didn’t have to suffer with all those injuries now.
