Sterilising rubber stoppers

I have researched sterilization of beakers, vials and everything coming into contact with the prepared oil, common methods for sterilizing the stoppers seems to be soak in Hydrogen peroxide or some ba.

My question is do these then have to be dry before putting onto vials? Surely if they are damp then this will add unwanted peroxide to the bottles?

Thanks H

There are two ways to sterilize, autoclave (this is 99.9999999999%) effective and long term heat sterilization ( 3hrs in 170 C oven). All the ways you described can clean them to some degree but the bacteria will still be there.

Has anyone ever tried sterilizing with a pressure cooker? I used to grow mushrooms back in the day and that was the closest thing to an autoclave back then.

here's what i do, submerge them in Hydrogen peroxide for 30 mins, then fully rinse them wearing gloves with distilled water, then heat them in an oven (ideally you have a convection oven just for this) at 300F. for 2-3 hrs.

the trick i find however is to keep the vials already sterilized and put the stoppers into the vials right away in order to keep the inside sterile.

this method works for me and i've never had an issue.

Are those rubber stoppers pre-lubed? lol Steaming them should do it if you don't have an autoclave. Water boils at 212°F. Maybe for 2 hours. Any time the object hits air it's at risk autoclave or not.

You can use a pressure cooker - I used one too for a while. Autoclave is just pressure and heat. 15 mins in a pressure cooker @12lbs.

If you use a pressure cooker, you need a couple hours to let it return to room temp. Any kind of rapid pressure loss will cause quite the mess.

What I tried with my first homebrew couple of days ago was, wash in ordinary dishwashing liquid, rinse, submerge in Alcohol bath for 20 mins, rinse in distilled water then leave in some BA untill ready to use. There are some better methods above I reckon, but this seemed to suit my purpose.
