hi im currently trying to cut up , need to lose around 20lbs. im going on a high protein diet and i wanted to no if adding a whey protein shake will do me good, as i read else where that whey protein spikes insulin so should i stay away from it?

Whey protein does spike insulin so do two things, keep the amount of protein 50 grams or less.
Add an oil like olive or some fish oils.
Make the ratio of fat to protein the same.

High protein is ok but you need a fuel source in there somewhere.
If dieting I sugest fat.
Most people are sugar burners which does spike insulin and make fat loss harder.
To convert to being a fat burner (for fuel) you need to drop the carbs to around 20 grams a day and up the fats.
Does not really matter which fat either.
Within about 7 days you will switch to fat burning for fuel.

This will keep the insulin to glucagon ratio a bit better, remember spiked insulin will stop the production of GH, in the presence of insulin fat loss stops dead.

So high protein is fine but I would seriously consider upping the fats to switch from being a sugar burner to a fat burner.
You should have good success for between 6-12 weeks, then the body will get smart and fat loss will die.
I think it has to do with cortisol, sluggish thyroid, leptin, probably a couple of other mechinisms involved too.
To get around that, you toss a cheat day anywhere between 5-7 days.
This will replace glycogen stores and have some anabolic effect due to being insulin sensitive and carb loading.

Carb cycling is very common for bodybuilders to strip fat and spare muscle.
There is strong evidence that high fat diets support lean muscle over high carb diets.

So, yah add a fat to that to slow down absorpton and if you want you can add apple pectin to that and slow that down even more.
