E. Hanover trainer pleads guilty to giving steroids to juvenile

[SIZE=-1]Anthony M. Cuppari, 27, was the last to resolve criminal charges of the people arrested in March 2007 as part of a five-week investigation called ''Operation Drop-off" and conducted by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

Cuppari's basic plea agreement with the prosecutor's office is to be sentenced to five years in prison on the charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and distribution of anabolic steroids to a juvenile.

But county Assistant Prosecutor Vincent Leo III has filed a motion with Superior Court Judge Thomas V. Manahan that seeks an enhanced penalty, or doubling of the punishment as state law allows, on the charge of giving drugs to a juvenile.

If the judge agrees with the state's motion, he could sentence Cuppari to 10 years in prison on April 9.

Cuppari admitted to the judge Thursday that he gave a gram of cocaine in 2007 to his then-girlfriend. He also admitted that he gave anabolic steroids to a 17-year-old. He said he did not accept money in either case. Authorities said the steroids were in liquid form.

Cuppari was identified at the time of his arrest in March 2007 as a leader of the steroid ring. An accused co-ringleader, Michael B. Dente, 27, of East Hanover, pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy charges and was sentenced to two years' probation and 90 days on SLAP.

Operation Drop-off resulted in the seizure of more than 500 steroid pills and enough drugs to produce 35,000 doses of steroids, authorities said.

At the time of his arrest, Cuppari was a volunteer football coach at Hanover Park High School. The juvenile he gave steroids to attended the high school and worked out at the same gym as Cuppari, authorities said....[/SIZE]
