THE coach of two Greek athletes who won medals at the Sydney Olympics - then withdrew from the Athens Games to avoid a drug test - has been implicated in the BALCO sports doping scandal.

Chris Tzekos became a revered figure in Greece following the success of his proteges Kostas Kenteris, who won the Sydney men's 200m gold medal, and Ekaterina Thanou, who won the silver medal in the 100m behind Marion Jones.

The victories by Kenteris and German 800m runner Nils Schumann - whose coach Thomas Springsteen was last month banned for life over possession of dope - were the two biggest surprises of the Sydney athletics program.

Tzekos has been named by US authorities in the indictment of Illinois rogue chemist Patrick Arnold, who was charged with supplying banned performance-enhancing designer anabolic steroids to Victor Conte's Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO).

Authorities alleged Arnold sent the designer steroid THG to Conte, a friend in Houston and internationally to Tzekos, who coincidentally lived for some years in Illinois distributing bodybuilding supplements before returning to Athens to start coaching athletes.
