Very sad news. He had struggled with heart problems for several years. RIP

Mike Matarazzo had triple-bypass heart surgery in 2004. Ron Avidan wrote a nice piece about it on Getbig:

http://www.getbig.com/iview/matarazzo041221.htm

Matarazzo discussed what he suspected to be the cause of his heart problems in an interview with Ron Harris for MuscleMag in 2008:

Ron Harris: There are some guys who claim steroids arent dangrerous, while others say using them is like playing roulette. Do you personally feel that steroids were a major factor in what happened to you?

Mike Matarazzo: "I know it was the drugs that caused this to happen and I don't care what anyone says. All the gurus and self proclaimed steroid experts who try to downplay the risks are talking out their asses. They have no idea what will happen to people. Nobody in my family EVER had heart problems. It WAS the steroids I took. Anythime you put an artificial drug in your body you're taking a chance. Most guys think nothing will ever happen to them. Just watch. I bet we will be seeing more serious heart problem and worse when they get to there 40's."

The following quotes were on his Wikipedia page:

"Oh, god, where do I begin? I'd have to say that everything that led to my heart problem began the minute I started getting serious about competitive bodybuilding. In order to get bigger, I'd eat five, six, seven pounds of red meat a day, no vegetables. And I'd stay away from fruits because of their sugar.

"Worst were the chemicals. I have so many memories of being alone in a hotel room the week, five days or two days before a contest, and doing unspeakable things to my body—steroids, growth hormones, diuretics—anything and everything that we as bodybuilders do to achieve a certain look.

"It has affected my whole life, so to all those guys who are on an eternal quest to have 21" arms and 20" calves, and who are so vain about their never-say-die attitude, I say, 'Change your attitude.' Worry about keeping that body of yours as healthy as possible, because it's going to have to last you not just through your next contest or to the end of your bodybuilding contract, but for a long time. And a long time for a human being is nothing. It goes by real quick, even quicker when your health is gone and you have nothing to stand live for.

Mike Matarazzo warned of the health risks associated with taking bodybuilding drugs necessary to become a competitive bodybuilder at the 2002 Shawn Ray All-Star Seminar :

Nassar and now mike, seems all of the guys who inspired me in the 90's are dying from heart problems.I wonder if anabolics are really to blame.heavy diuretics and recreational substances also could be a major factor as well before aas is considered the bad guy, just saying a lot of the guys from the 70's and 80's are still here but I'm seeing everyone from the 90's going up shit creek.may bee something there but again I'm. Just rambling.

I got meet Mike briefly when he first came out in show in San Francisco. He was of the new generation monsters back then. Pretty down earth nice guy. He would talk to anyone. RIP

I believe Mike's family had a history of bad hearts, I think in his case is was genetics more than anything. I don't know about Nasser he fell off the cliff after he screwed up his back muscles from hitting a nerve using stupid synthol. Nasser's back atrophied, probably same thing Coleman did to his back.

just like Lyle Alzado said it was AAS causing his brain cancer, but his Doctor came out and said no it wasn't AAS use. Lyle Alzado died of AIDS. Mike wanted to blame something besides his bad heart genetics.

Nobody knows, but there is a disturbing number of BBers that have croaked earlier than they should have and even more that haven't which makes it very difficult to form any conclusion whatsoever.

So you're saying you know Mike's family heart health history better than he did...

what you are saying is only AAS user get bad hearts? more people that never touch AAS have bad hearts than the people that have used AAS. heart issues are genetic is what I'm saying. he also blamed it on eating red meat too, but they have proved red meat doesn't cause bad hearts either.

I don't think you understand English. Heart issues are typically genetic. We get our genetics from our mother and father, as they got from their own. We can generalize by saying we share genetics with our family. Now here's where Mike says no one else in his family had heart issues.

Therefore he acknowledges heart issues are genetic but seeing as how no one is his family has those genetic problems... He is trying to find a possible causes that is NOT genetics.
