Julius Maddox 739.6lb bench press world record

Why isn’t it considered cheating if there are spotters who have their hands on the whole time and a lift off? Serious question - never got into PL.

Their hands aren't supposed to come in contact with the bar during the actual lift. The liftoff is allowed. After the liftoff and until the judge says rack there should be no contact.

Even if it wasnt spotter error, the spotter on the left fucked up big time. Dude had his hands up in the air cheering while the man is holding 700+. How can he spot that way. Fire his ass

I think they're saying he nudged the bar with the hand he wasn't cheering with. But yeah, spotters don't need to be cheering, they need to just do their job.

Rant time:
Although I agree with you , the powerlifting world doesnt. Not sure how much it counts if you cant un rack it your self. I mean its about the hardest part of the lift, getting it off the hooks. Then that fucking 2 second pause shit, is that really necessary? I understand them trying to keep these SHW guys from just bouncing 7 hundo off their titties but really? a 1-2 sec pause, how about just touch w/o bouncing. They seem to get a bit carried away with what motionless is and for how long. You can dive bomb the hole in the squat and bounce out but not for bench?
Rant over

The lift off is what it is, cant stay tight w/o it.
The spotters arent supposed to touch the weight.

There's less consistency in bench rules from fed to fed and meet to meet. In the meets I've done and watched there's more disqualifications and missed lifts on bench than squat or deadlift by far. By missed I mean not necessarily that it was too heavy, but they didn't follow commands or some other technical error.

You can choose to not take a liftoff if you want.

Ive seen this too, some of these judges give a loooong count and some dont. Raw vs Multiply, is a whole other issue. Them dudes in the shirt dont even touch half the time or break parallel on squats. " it's because the suit is restrictive, blah, blah ,blah" Then they call a raw guy on depth, and he's hitting lower than the Multiply guys who are getting 3 white lights.

My workout partner does USAPL. I went to one of his meets earlier this year where they were running two platforms at once and the difference in depth standards between the two sides was insane. Unfortunately for him he was on the side of the judges wanting extreme depth. They seemed like they wanted ass to calves and over half the lifters were getting three reds. It was crazy.

There's so many feds with people that want it different ways.

USAPL has a bad reputation for that, also just general nose in the air attitude towards members. Seems like people are jumping ship to USPA in my neck of the woods. Tired of the iron fist bs

Just read that guy is 450lbs, up from around 400lbs a few years ago. You gotta be dedicated to that bench life to keep bulking like that. My last meet there was a guy that was mid 300's benching 500+ and he had a gallon of chocolate milk with him and a loaf of bread at the meet.
At his rate its gona be a bw bench by the time he starts getting in the 800's

That was scary as shit to watch and dude could have risked serious injury because the spotter on left was showboating and didn't pay attention. When weights get real heavy it becomes imperative for spotters to pay attention.

Damn nice lift otherwise and was good the lift was counted as good for his troubles.

Nice lift. Not trying to take anything away from this impressive feat of strength but 1.8 ( give or take) X bodyweight??? Franco did 2.5 X ( give or take)----albeit Maddox has greater Wilks.... p.s that spotter needs banned from any further spotting postitions

Gain 100lbs and your bench becomes like a two board press, lol. I bet he hits 750lbs soon by the look of that though. With it being controversial he's gonna want to come back and beat it and that went up fast.
Even at the next meet he goes to he could indeed hit 750 or even 760 and hopefully without any more snafus like what just happened.

Yep, that 739lbs went up so fast it's insane.

I will never go to a USAPL meet ever. I like USPA, They have most consistant judging, in my opinion anyway. I dont mind a weekend vacation to travel a few hours to meets. We are planning a week long trip arround a meet in Vegas next year. This is in beginning phases, but should make for a fun time. Get there a day before weigh in, weigh in, feast, lift, chill in the hotel (Golden Nugget) for the day after then 2 days to party.

I prefer USPA, too. I did APA a couple times and it was okay. They put whether you're tested or untested by your name up on the board and I didn't care much for that. USAPL is way too elitist.
