Tor over a VPN is just as good as it ever was.Seems like now all it does is just draw attention now that FBI and NSA have "broken" tor
this is just a platitudeTor over a VPN is just as good as it ever was.
I like tor. but damn it is so slow and it sometimes annoys and infuriates me. But real good serviceTor is slow and apparently just like the Dark Web does indeed draw attention.
Tor is necessary for narcotics, but not aas. A VPN along with a computer that has a drive that can easily be wiped after orders is all anyone would ever need. VPN to track your packs as well.
I used to use Tor on a dvd with a laptop where I pulled the hard drive so it would leave no trace, but after doing research I realized I was wasting my time and probably doing more harm than good, because I also agree that the government can more than easily get past Tor.
Very good advice. Although it is not very convenient, but the really correct set of instructionsGet a prepaid simcard with data, tether via your phone from random, enroute places, use tor, no bluetooth, mic or cam, change mac address to all zero's.
Well. What are your recommendations or how do you do everything?Everything you do that's connected to anything internet, is designed to out you before you take your first step. There's not a single thing that can't be accessed.
Tor? lol
And these ridiculous bitcoin-only sources, are exactly what you would expect... dumb home brewers.
Especially that tranny @DragonOrdnance
No recommendations except don't do anything online, if privacy is a concern.Well. What are your recommendations or how do you do everything?

there is nothing absolutely safe in our world. There is a level of admission and it suits us or notTOR is fairly secure, but I don't think it's as secure as some people would have you believe. But the government isn't going to expose their ability to break TOR just to bust you ordering a kg of testosterone to your house.

Using Tor without a VPN is absolutely retarded. All it will do it ensure that your ISP logs and tracks everything you do. Never, ever use Tor without a VPN. The danger here is that the government doesn't need to be ACTIVELY trying to track you, because the ISP will hold onto any logs using Tor protocol for an extra long period of time, as they basically are going to assume it is illegal activity. So then, it is possible that years down the road the government seizes a darknet site or something and gets ahold of your ID and wants to track you for and request info from your ISP who just so happens to have these logs because you didn’t use a good VPN for the entirety of any and all Tor browser sessions.I have a buddy that works in computer forensics and he said that even people that use Duck Duck Go are fairly safe. It has to be a major crime for the government to even go through the trouble of tracking TOR and even then it may not work out. He did however say that if you are in the USA then it is pretty easy to link you to a VPN that is based in the USA as well
I agree that it’s not very reasonable to be on the Internet without vpn, especially if the goal is not to leave traces and try to be anonymousNo

Of course using Duckduckgo is safe, it is just a search engine. It really isn't any different than using other search engines except that they as a company dont personally track everything you do to harvest your data for advertising purposes as well as directly selling that data to other companies.
Edit: now to be clear Tor is encrypted by default, but as the OP mentioned, the government has defeated it. This is especially bad as time goes by. Consider a decade from now, your ISP held onto these, what would now be OLD, ANCIENT version of Tor logs, and the gov can crack it apart like a saltine cracker.
I don't know how long ISPs hold onto those logs, but it is critical to consider. Also knowing the statute of limitations for things like steroids in your state.
Okay you are really underselling VPN here.Imho they are all tracable it just depends on how big of a fish you are. VPN are just a form of security theater. Makes you feel safer and may provide some anemity but really will not stop someone who wants to know from finding out.
I'm not saying it does nothing. But for most people the security it brings isn't the level they assume it does. And the people who are getting away with stuff only using VPN would likely get away with it still if they were not.Okay you are really underselling VPN here.
Can a state-actor / law enforcement agency still figure out who you are? Yeah, probably. But god damn, it's NOT worthless and it's not "theater" (my interpretation of what you meant by that is that it's essentially not worth it and just something people do to make themselves feel better/might help a TINY bit but really not much).
VPN is a very valuable tool if you use a reputable one. I have a past post regarding VPN recommendations that people can reference if desired. Imagine this scenario: your ISP logs ALL the shady websites you visited and exactly when you visited them for months or even years. They hold onto this stuff. Then law enforcement busts a vendor and sees your name somewhere. They go to the ISP without even a warrant and simply ask "Hey bruh can you hand us these logs for James Franko? We think he does drugs." So the ISP is just like, "Hell yeah man here is the last decade of shady sites he's done, his porn preferences, and also he's probably cheating on his wife since he's on ashleymadison and adultfriendfinder CONSTANTLY. Have fun!!"
Or they say, "We have logs on his household, but unfortunately it went through a VPN, so we can't tell where it was going to and you really won't get anything of value, unfortunately."
Law Enforcement then either further pursues you because they just got a mountain of evidence super easily from the ISP, or they just say, "eh fuck it let's try the next guy who was dumb enough to just do everything over clearnet, no VPN, didn't even use HTTPS, just plain old HTTP "(getting sarcastic here lol)
The point is, it's not theater. It DOES help. It is another barrier in the way of those who would ruin your life if they felt the inclination. VPN is WELL worth the money, it's well worth using. I just keep mine on all the time. There's no reason not to. The only time I turn it off is if I am downloading a game from Steam or maybe some large files from Nexus, then I take it off because my internet is already slow and I don't need the VPN bottlenecking it any further.
So there. That is the opinion of someone who's worked in IT security for over a decade. Take it or leave it.
Edit: If you are a big vendor or something then yes, of course eventually they'll find a way to get you. It might not be by tracing your web activity, there's plenty of other ways they can figure out what you've been up to. Keep a low profile, practice opsec, and don't be stupid. But even if you are a big fish, then you should know what you're doing. Use a VPN, follow the highest level of OPSEC rules. That's how some darknet vendors have been able to stay in business going on 10 years now and still not been caught--because they're fucking smart about it and know what they're doing, and they follow their processes no matter what.
