Just curious, because I haven't. We have cattleherds of people nowadays who hold this sort of shit up like the gospel!! I'm really getting tired of people knocking down bodybuilding as if the lifestyle is full of dumbasses. I feel that bodybuilders are the smartest people when it comes to training and nutrition. I dont care what type of PHD someone holds, or what sort of theories they think they know, who knows better than someone who looks the part? I'm not saying there is anything wrong with other types of workouts, and to each their own, but to disregard bodybuilding as completely useless for any real life strength application is absurd. I see all of these people in gyms doing these off the wall exercises now. All of this vertical leaping bullshit, these fruity frog hop moves, battle ropes (which yes, will kick your ass!!) But the fact of the matter is almost anyone I've ever met who only trains in this manner looks very small to me. Or if they've lost weight they have become a smaller version of what they were before, not necessarily changed proportions to that significant of a degree. Like I said, I do see some very good practical applications to some of this training, and yes I believe a program like p90x or insanity is a quick way to take off weight and get a base for beginning to lift weights. But to totally knock a bodybuilder for his training or pass his muscles off as "just show muscles" is stupid. But back to my question, how many ripped up guys or muscular guys have you personally seen and know, who do this type of training, or crossfit? I understand they are not big, but most not even lean, skinny fat to me

1. Who's knocking bodybuilding....where?

2. Many many many people don't follow BB workouts because they don't want to look like a BB.

3. The trend is see now with the masses is not a desire to look like Arnold but to have overall health that can be accomplished within a limited time frame. Apparently the BB at my gym are independently wealthy and don't need to work because regardless of which day or time I'm there they are too.

4. Even BB want to change it up sometimes. I know some big boys who do P90x for a change of pace.

5. A lot of those small but really dense guys frog hopping around the gym are training for a specific goal and BB is not the best type of training for them.

Bodybuilders know how to manipulate physique/body composition better than anyone. That's essentially the definition of bodybuilding. It doesn't matter whether a person wants to look like a "bodybuilder" (which is generally read as meaning a competitive bodybuilder) or not. If they want to change their physical appearance, bodybuilding programs are usually the most efficient way to do it.

I really haven't seen any trend towards "overall health" being the primary motivator of people who work out. I think "improving physical appearance" still ranks above all (even if they don't want to look like bodybuilders). It's hard to tell because most people (often falsely) equate being health = looking good/better and consider them one and the same.

A big problem is that not everyone (perhaps few people) actually enjoy the process outlined by bodybuilding. And for someone to stick with a program they must enjoy the process and not just the end result.

Crossfit, etc may provide a more enjoyable "process" for people to achieve their goals. I still don't think it's the most efficient for body recomposition purposes. And it's not intended for maximum hypertrophy. But it is a realistic and accessible means of achieving their goals.

On the other hand their are some people out there who could care less about how training affects the way they look. It's more about performance and sports-specific training rather than hypertrophy-specific training.

I think this latter group tends to represent a minority of the people you typically see in the gyms. Most are interest in looking better. Many want a combination of looks+performance. And a few just want performance.
