Help w/ fighting NYC parking ticket

I got a parking ticket for being parked during the street sweeping time. I've been thinking of using parkingticket.com, but I found an error on the ticket and was wondering if this was enough to fight it myself by sending in a dismissal letter? Can any bro's help out on this? I'm wondering if the error I found is basis enough to have the ticket dimissed, or should I just pay parkingticket.com half the fee and let them fight it?

For the hours in effect section of the ticket the officer has filled in 8:30 am - 9:00 am; however in the Time(of violation) section he/she filled out 8:42 and forget to fill in the bubble for am or pm! So, technically, I could say I was parked there at 8:42 pm which would not be a violation since the officer did not specify! Would this work? Help me out guys...

EDIT* I forgot to mention that he left the VIN number blank and did not record the model year of the vehicle.

just do it online- send in a letter stating u find the summons to be "fatally defective" because no am/pm was stated on the face of the summons.......the v.i.n. isnt mandatory...sometimes neither is the year of the car......the am/pm is reason enough to be dismissed though

I mailed out my request for dismissal letter. I used a template I found on parkingticket.com and altered it for my specific case; beats paying parkingticket.com to do the work for me :D

I just know if they forget the license plate # you can fight it. Then again,if they forgot that, they probably wouldn't be able to find you anyway :) .. I mean, made a mistake with the #s

One time I got a speeding ticket and the officer transposed to numbers of my DL. Like say it was 05326197, he wrote down 05362197 (not my real # so don't bother trying to look me up on publicdata you bastards :D ). Anyway, I filed what's called a "motion to quash" (sp?). The officer had two years to respond and never did. A friend of mine knew the judge though, I don't know if that had anything to do with it (it was mentioned).

Another friend of mine who is hispanic but very light skinned, had an officer write down that he was "white" on the ticket. He got that dismissed. His last name is Ortega. LOL

I would try to fight and win and say that you were given the ticket at night rather during the day... I was told by two cops who work in NYC that they (the city) give out bullshit tickets A LOT to make money and people who are none the wiser just pay and the city gets that hard earned money...crazy huh?

CROOKED GOV'T OFFICIALS?!?!?! Say it ain't so...

Speaking of NYC parking, anyone know where I can park in or around NYC? I'm scheduled to stay at a hotel in NYC/MTE next week. I'm driving up and I have no idea what to do with my car. I won't need my car when I am there. Can I park on the Jersey side perhaps and just take a light rail/subway over to NYC?

It's up to you. Contrary to popular belief, there is plenty of free parking in NYC if you have a little patience and know where to look. As for midtown east, there's not too much parking over there without meters :-\ If you drove up to the upper east side, you could prolly find some parking without meters up there; however some days you might have to move your car for street sweeping :-\ The key to parking in midtown is to always look on the very outskirts of midtown and walk a few extra blocks. Anywhere you go now in the very commercial areas of midtown, they have put up muni-meters

If you don't need your car for your entire stay there, I would say why not just leave your car in Jersey? I would just leave your car at a free commuter lot and take an NJ transit train into midtown. Not every commuter lot is free, however! I know for a fact that hawthorne, clifton and passaic NJ transit stations have free commuter lots. I leave my car there sometimes if I don't feel like walking the 20 minute walk to the station. Check out http://www.njtransit.com for locations and info on lots. If you wanna leave your car at passaic station(30-35 min train ride to midtown), take route 3 to the Passaic Ave exit. When you get off head north on Passaic ave; after a mile or two you will see the train station on your right. You can park on the street if the lot is full. Make sure you buy your ticket from the vending machines there; if you buy it on board you will have to pay $5 surcharge! Buy a ticket for midtown. You have to transfer in secaucus. Total ride takes 30-35 min; you will arrive at NY Penn station, which is underneath MSG. There are lots of other NJ transit stations, but I am not familiar with parking at those. There is also something called the PATH that you can ride from newark, hoboken, harrison or Jersey City; however, I'm not sure you would be able to find parking and/or would want to leave your car in some of those areas. The reason I mentioned passaic station above, is b/c it is right on the way to the lincoln tunnel. Good luck, if you have any other questions about parking, getting into the city or questions about places to go or whatever in the city, lemme know...

Joffa: AWESOME INFO, THANK YOU!!! Sorry that I hijacked your thread, but I'm glad I did. This information will save me a LOT of headache, time, and cost. I will probably park on the Jersey side like you suggested as I don't see a need for a car or the hassle once I am in NYC.

I seem to be having a bit of trouble finding a station that allows for multiple day parking without problem. Anyone know if multiple day parking is readily available in Newark or other areas near stations? It appears that the Neward station doesn't have its own parking, but it says that private parking facilities are avilable.

As far as Newark goes, I'm not sure there is any parking there. There's a couple lots around newark penn station that charge like $15 a day. Other than that there is metered parking. I don't think Newark would be a good place to leave your car.

Like I said above, there are several that have parking available. If you're worried about parking overnight, just find one in the suburbs, where you can just park in front of someone's house on the street and walk a couple blocks to the station. I left my car for days on Passaic ave next to the passaic station while I flew to the west coast for several days, cause I was too lazy to walk to the station. Near the clifton station, there are plenty of suburbs around the station where you can leave your car in a safe neighborhood. Most of these areas don't even have street sweeping / no parking days. As far as I know, it's perfectly legal to leave your car parked as long as you like on a public street as long as there are no signs saying otherwise. Correct me if I'm wrong here, Karch or anyone else.

Thanks again for all the info.

I called the Union parking garage. They allow multiple day parking at $3/day. Does that seem like a resonable option?

Yesterday, I called lots of stations that appeared to be in the suburbs. Some of the stations were like "you can park overnight, but it isn't recommended" or "them: sure you can park overnight. me: is parking readily available? them: hahaha. no."

I think I'll use UNION as a primary and the suburb parking as an emergency backup.

Update: My goodness, there are a lot of rail systems: NJ Transit, PATH, MTA (NY subway), North Metro Railroad, Amtrak,...

Looks like NJ transit takes me to New York Penn Station (not be be confused with the NJ Penn Station). But the NY subway map shows TWO NY Penn stations, both on 34th street. My hotel is The Barclay at 111 East 48th street, which is just north of Grand Central. Trying to figure out the best route to take. I think I want to take the 'E' line from 34 Street-Penn station to Lexington Avenue/53 Street. Then maybe I can take a 'subway transfer' to Lexington Avenue/51 Street where there is a station for line '6' but not get on line '6'?

And if http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited is correct then I guess I can just pay $24 and get unlimited subway and local bus rides?

UPDATE: I made it here to NYC without problem. Thank You!
