Bitcoin fees to send money?!?!

I tried to send the 50$ i had left over in my block chain wallet last night . The fees were crazy that they wanted to do this. 20-25$?!?!? What's going on and is there anyway around this. I can change how high I set the fees but my understanding is if they are too low the money will just sit in Bitcoin purgatory. Please help!!!
