Filters. As of now home brewing looks like to be in the future (hopefully near) but I am gathering all information on some stuff like best filters. I can get 0.20, 0.45 and 0.47 micron filters either RC or PTFE. Really no clue what's the difference in types but I have read not sure exactly where you cannot use 0.45 with hand pumping? Also do they HAVE to be sterile or not necessarily?

45 does work well with hand pump.
And yes make sure it is a sterile filter.
take home brew serious or you will fk yourself up!
Not knowing if you need a sterile filter is not a good sign

Actually I thought all filters are supposed to be sterile until I stumbled on a OUR FILTERS ARE STERILE UNLIKE OTHER VENDORS on ebay. Either way I am buying from a local lab which is specialized for wine production and believe their filters are gonna be sterile but have to ask anyway

If you want to pre-filter with .45um that's fine but your final filtering should be done with a .22um filter. Nylon or PTFE filter material is fine. If you don't plan on pressure cooking the brew you need to use a sterile filter. If you do pressure cook you don't need to use a sterile filter but it doesn't hurt anything to use one. I use whatman Zapcap-cr which is a non-sterile filter. I pressure cook the brew after I'm done filtering.

Cheers, and just noticed, can you hand pump 0.20 micron filter NOT 0.45 as asked by mistake in OP.

I use .22um filters with a hand vacuum pump. No issues whatsoever after figuring out why I was constantly losing vacuum....rubber o-ring on media jar was making bad seal. Took it off and no issues after that.
